K-12 Education & Services
Sending your child to school is compulsory and mandated by law however, how you decide to educate your child is a matter of choice. School Liaison services are designed to address educational issues of military connected children by assisting families in coping with the normal reactions to the stressors related to multiple relocations, deployments and the every-day challenges of military lifestyle.
Many options are available for children in grades PK3 through 12th grade who reside in Washington D.C. The JBAB School Liaison provides guidance to military-connected families with children primarily attending DC Public Schools (DCPS), Charter Schools (DCPCS), Home School, and Private Schools in the surrounding area.
NOT LIVING IN DC?
If you decide to live in Virginia or Maryland, please find your school first and house second – Maryland and Virginia do not offer school choice so there is a school assigned to your respective residential address.
Enrollment
As mandated by the District of Columbia, children admitted to the kindergarten program in public schools shall be five (5) years old on or before September 30th. Please visit the DCPS website for the enrollment packet and FAQ's. https://enrolldcps.dc.gov/node/76. You may want to complete the health assessment and dental screening prior to arriving at JBAB if possible.

MILITARY DIRECTIVE
If your child is not selected to attend a school through the DC School Lottery, you may be able to utilize the military directive for placement. DC Public Schools has a military directive which will allow children of ACTIVE DUTY service members living on JBAB to enroll in any DC Public School provided there is space (this directive does not apply to D.C. Public Charter Schools or for Pre-K). Please note the military directive is not a preference--it is intended to offer open enrollment to DCPS for military connected children living on JBAB or other installations within the District of Columbia. The School Liaison will provide additional information upon request.
SCHOOL BUS PROGRAM
The JBAB School Bus Program is funded by the Air Force and only JBAB students ride the buses. We also offer a bus stop at the Youth Center for Before and After School Care. PK & ELEMENTARY
MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOLS
Leckie Education Campus (www.leckielionsdc.org) is the JBAB zoned elementary and middle school (PK3 through 8th grade) and it houses the highest number of military connected students of any school in Washington DC. The main reason why parents choose this school is the school's proximity to the base, as it is located blocks outside the Belleview housing gate. Since this is the in-boundary school for JBAB, parents may enroll their children once they have proof of residency (housing lease). Contact the registrar at Leckie Education Campus to register: LeckieECenroll@k12.dc.gov (571) 440-2283 (571) 440-242 Pre-kindergarten for 3 and 4-year-old students is free for DC residents; however, placement only occurs through the DC school lottery. In-boundary preference is given to families who live on JBAB and who wish to have their pre-kindergarten children attend Leckie. Children must be 3 or 4 by September 30th in order to attend PK. Children must be 5 years old by September 30th to attend kindergarten in DC.
Most of the JBAB middle school students attend Hardy Middle School or Alice Deal Middle School. Most JBAB high school students attend Jackson-Reed (formerly Woodrow Wilson) High School. Both middle schools feed into Jackson-Reed High School and all three schools are located in Georgetown. Please contact the School Liaison Officer for information on placement in these schools. If you would like to request a Youth Sponsor for your middle school or high school age student, please contact the Youth Center at 202-767-4003. Elementary school age children may receive a sponsor as part of the School Age Care program (before and after school care at the Youth Center). DC Public Schools also offers select or magnet high schools. The application process for these select high schools begins through the My School DC lottery (www.myschooldc.org). For more information about selective high schools in DC, go to https://www.myschooldc.org/how-apply/applying-high-school.
EFMP & SPECIAL EDUCATION
My School DC school profiles have contact information for a staff member at each school identified specifically to speak about special education services. Each school’s profile also links out to their School Report Card, which contains data on how students with disabilities are performing on all metrics in the School Transparency and Reporting (STAR) framework. My School DC has a Parent Advisory Council that has created a set of questions by parents for parents. There is a section written by parents of students with disabilities. https://www.myschooldc.org/how-apply/students-with-disabilities
LEARN DC CHARTER SCHOOL
JBAB has partnered with the LEARN Charter School Network to build a charter school on base. The school, LEARN DC PCS, opened in August of 2021 with grades PK3-1st grade, adding additional grades each year until reaching the charter limit of PK3-8th grade. Final capacity is capped at 550 students, with 50% of the seats reserved for children of active duty military living in DC. If you or your spouse are active duty and would like to register, please go to www.MySchoolDC.org school lottery website. For more information about LEARN DC, go to the LEARN DC website at www.learncharter.org/schools/learndc.

STUDENT SPONSORSHIP
As you know, packing up your belongings, saying goodbye to friends, and moving to a new place and maybe even a new country can be tough. It can be very exciting too! Youth Sponsorship is one way to make moving a bit easier. The goal of the Youth Sponsorship program is to provide youth who are moving to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling an avenue to get connected with other JBAB students and activities. This is a good way for students to find out information about JBAB and the surrounding area. If you are interested in requesting a Youth Sponsor for your child, please contact the JBAB Youth Center at 202-767-4003.
